Pathway Project Highlight: Healthcare Technology & Administration

Essex County College

With the New Jersey job market booming for those in the field of Healthcare IT, Essex County College (ECC) and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Institute have partnered to provide two professional certification courses in Healthcare Information Technology. For professionals in healthcare or IT, the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems – (CPHIMS®) certificate is a means to establish expertise in the field. For candidates with little or no experience in Healthcare or IT and looking to advance in the industry, the Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems – (CAHIMS®) certificate is the best choice to help students enter the field and advance their career pathways.

On May 9, 2024, leadership from New Jersey’s HIMSS Chapter and members visited ECC’s Newark campus to share their career journeys with students, faculty, and administrators. Six members spoke, including:

  • Eric Jones MSHIA, BSN, RN, Director of Clinical Informatics, Hackensack Meridian Health
  • Monae Haskins, BSN, RN, Senior Application Specialist, Atlantic Health System
  • Cindy Gerard MSN, RN, Application Systems Analyst III and Nursing Informatics, Atlantic Health System
  • Kurt Telep, Northeast Healthcare Field CTO, Nutanix
  • Casey Hafford, Director of Strategic Accounts, Roundtable Strategic Solutions
  • Piyush Patel, Chief Revenue Officer, SquareML

Pathway Project Highlight: Healthcare Technology & Administration

The panel discussion was led by Dr. Elvy Vieira, Dean of Community, Continuing Education and Workforce Development at ECC and Dana Castro, Senior Director at HIMSS Institute. The esteemed panelists inspired and enlightened those in the room as they described their career pathway journeys that led them to their exciting roles in data and informatics. They shared how many of their careers were not linear, nor their education. Some stated how they went back to school to finish their first degree and were pursuing second or third degrees. Other panelists who didn’t finish their degrees, had built professional stackable credentials in their career professions. Common learnings that advanced the careers for the speakers were the importance of saying “Yes” to opportunities, saying “Yes” to volunteering, and saying “Yes” to continuing education.
