NJ Pathways Alumni Spotlight: Medical Assistant for ESL Students Program, A Life-Changing Experience

Driven by a desire to advance her career in the medical field while improving her English language skills, Mary Arismendiz enrolled in the Medical Assistant Program for ESL Students—an NJ Pathways pathway project—at Passaic County Community College. For Mary, the program offered the perfect opportunity to pursue both goals.

“My main goal was to gain the knowledge and certifications needed to work as a medical assistant,” Mary shared. “But I also wanted to feel more confident communicating in English, especially in a professional setting.”

As an ESL student, Mary faced challenges with understanding medical terminology and speaking English confidently. However, the program’s specialized language courses and supportive instructors helped her overcome those obstacles.

“What I enjoyed most about the program was the hands-on training,” Mary said. She learned to take vital signs, manage medical records, and perform CPR through real-world practice. These experiences not only gave Mary the skills needed for her chosen career but also boosted her confidence in her abilities.

One of the most memorable moments of Mary’s journey came during a role-playing activity designed to help students practice interacting with patients. “I was so nervous about speaking English in front of everyone,” Mary recalled. “But with the guidance of my instructor and the support of my classmates, I completed the activity successfully. That moment showed me how far I had come.”

Through hard work and dedication, Mary completed the program, gaining a strong foundation in medical knowledge, improved English-language skills, and built up the self-confidence needed to succeed as a medical assistant.

“This program has brought me closer to achieving my career dream and has shown me that persistence and dedication can help me overcome any challenge,” Mary reflected. “I am deeply grateful and proud to say it has been a life-changing experience.”

Mary’s journey is a testament to what’s possible with determination, the right resources, and a supportive learning environment.
